I Thought that today I could share one of my favorite songs for those nights when you’ve got a long way home, yet you still decide to walk it. As with all songs I post here, do take the time to listen to the actual lyrics.

[Sample (Scratched by Chief Xcel):]

Now you, who ever you are,
as you’re listening to what I’m going to say,
will probably not want to believe what I’m going to tell you.
And there isn’t any way in which I can make you believe;
I can only state the facts as they are
and hope that you will really believe me.

Hey yester-day you were supposed to meet me now I got to testify
I waited hours for you guess that all was just a lie
Figured you stepped inside soon enough you said good bye
“Peace Out! I’m gone and won’t be back!” I head your echo cry
Oh how the seconds fly left without a second try
I check and try to recollect how I just let you die
And now I wallow in these severed ties

Of Yesterday [woman's voice]

Of yester-day girl your really gone I guess that’s how it just should be
I had big plans for us today but now you’re history
Today’s a mystery you took pieces I miss of me
I keep on diggin deep tryin to find that kid in me
We had some really good discussions back then didn’t we?
Befriended me but now we don’t speak like we’re enemies
And all I got is memories

Of yesterday [woman's voice]

But Yester-day memories are priceless and I’m really glad you left em
There etched inside I take a ride when driftin through the spectrum
It’s just at times I dwell and dwell and then I have to catch up
To now while back in time it ceased to march it just kept on
I want you back I want you back when it was here I slept on
What I appreciate a little more now as a blessing
Now I’m complaining and regretting

About yesterday [woman's voice]

And I’m just goin nowhere fast

[CHORUS: woman's voice (repeat 2X)]
I don’t try to stay here
I just fly away here
Out of my oasis
I am not complacent

Your stuck in a flurry of illusions goin nowhere fast

I am today I’m all that ever was and ever is and uh
It is an honor, don’t become a mental prisoner
Just listen to the now and keep your mind from driftin off
I am the mission, the position of this instance uh
New opportunity to get the love your wishin for
To kick the door in to look for your ambitions, what?
You can move on out to elevate your existence up

Today [woman's voice]

I’m just today, I’m just the way I am
I am ever single day I am
I’m February, April, March and even May I am
I’m only what you make me hope I’m what you pray I am
Today I am, I’m never really far away I am
You better scope me like the hunter does the prey I am
You play “I am” out in the picture yes today I am
I’m everything your memory say I am

Today [woman's voice]

So seize me, I’m here to serve you if you serve me back
It’s easy, but difficult that’s time alone squeeze me
From beaming your feet when your all your actions turn to banking
An inkling, a hint, I’m moving faster than your blinking
So treat to just a slice of heaven why you cheat me?
Deceive me and now I’m hell inside these thoughts that link me
To flesh the soul it’s bound to I was truly made to be free

Today [woman's voice]

Instead I’m going nowhere fast

[Chorus (repeat 2X)]

[Sample (scratched by chief Xcel):]
I’m only saying this to show how all around
man or beast sleep away there gift of time
and never know the beauty of a good life below

I’m bout to change the way I’m livin homey
I’m eatin vegan, no ham or baloney
I’m startin off my day with yoga stretches
I’m bout to master self to study lessons
I’m swearin off the weed and alcohol
I won’t be affected by doubts at all
The sky’s the limit, watch I’m bout to ball

I’m spendin every single dollar wisely
I’m writin songs that’s bumpin like the Eisleys
I’ll have the answers you can all confide in me
Nothin the day could bring that will surprise me
I’m buildin to the fullest every minute
I’m through talkin the talk, I’m bout to live it
Ain’t even started yet, I’m at the finish line

Man I can’t wait until it’s here I’m sayin
Oh what, you haitin? What, you think I’m playin?
You think I ain’t just go ahead and watch me
I’ll use the lessons yesterday has taught me
I’m countin hours, minutes even seconds
Man I can’t even sleep, I’ll build my Heaven
Oh what, it here? Oh, oh what, it’s what?
Don’t even trip, just give me one more day
It’s really gonna be on tomorrow

[Chorus (repeat to end)]

Your stuck in a flurry of illusions goin nowhere fast [repeat 3X]

[Sample:]
There we are. All finished.
And you don’t know how much I appreciate your pardon.

Watch out blazing arrow

Do it just how you talk it
Nigga rolled in and walk it
Stick a toe in the water
Don’t falter, go on and fall in
Tell me, do you know your calling?
Yo, what your mission is fella?
I caught this vision when I met a fortune teller
In New Orleans French Quarter
on the bus bench an arbitrary corner
Sorta scary looking elder woman showed up outta nowhere
She stared into my eyes and said
“Sure as eyes green
You were conceived and walk the earth
Spit that heat, purifying I believe.
So are you ready for your cleansin?
Cause this is only the beginning.”

Thank you for connecting,

This month it really isn’t about the video but about the song (a music video was never shot for this track since it was an underground release back in the late 90s, but after listening to it you could imagine how ridiculously awesome a video could/should be made of it). The song in question is called Patriotism by El-P (El-Producto) of the now defunct group Company Flow.

I’m presenting you this song in the spirit of the upcoming G20 Summit here in Toronto, something to get all you activists pumped up for the “festivities”.

Enjoy. Lyrics are posted below.

[El-Producto]
…………………
Do you know who you are..
Do you know who you are fucking with?
Do you know, the access, to weapons, money and power
that we have? We will fucking kill you!

I’m the ugliest version of passed down toxic capitalist
rapid emcee perversion — I’m America!
Your bleeding-heart liberal drivel gets squashed
Wash em with sterilized rhyme patriot-guided weaponry bomb
from the makers of the devious hearts — I’m America!
You bitchy little dogs don’t even phase my basic policy
The bomb’s smarter, my Ronald Reagan’s crush Carter
With Bay of Pig tactics makin young men into martyrs
(Come on down!)
Come to my happy promised land
Smiley faced opportunity cypher
and jump on the CoFlow pension plan
A proletariat-crushing State of the Union
between serpentine words and mass confusion
of media controlled blurb advertising disillusionment
Your family will love my low-rent, low-life
no-brain, reality-dagger, MOVEMENT
Hop over the border for amusement; try to test the waters
that the other slaughter crews pay all they dues in
You up against — Jesus Freak, formin corporations in Young Republicans
Indelible NATO force hidden agenda, puppet governments
I’m lovin it! Keep the people guessin who I’m runnin with
Control the population and hide behind sacred covenants
Fuckin with me?!?! Means liberal wildlife burnin, gasoline seized
and an automagnetic third world printed with metal plates in they knees
Can’t you hear the disenchanted, hide the scream of
Gabriel’s reflected new wind instrument, a judgment played in flat C
I replace humans like robots in a GM factory (warning! warning!)
Then export metaphors to sweat shops, cause the price is satisfactory
Your pious little cries of injustice get met with apathy
(Awww, SHUT UP!!) Soak, cloak, hormone injected dairy product
and conservative right-wing anti-eroticism; the poisonous
resevoirs and power lines in your neighborhood cause botchilism
SENSELESS! Join the census, censorship sentences sentence
Triple-felon citizen paid pennance!
Dissension against C-F ends in, penetentiary residence
Lock em up first, then ask questions
Omniscient presence, my CHARM is the weapon
with cameras mics and satellites that leave privacy breathless
You don’t even know the chemicals you’ve ingested
Urine tested — BEAT INNOCENT MAN ‘TIL HE CONFESSES

“Who’s America? Who’s America? Who’s America? Who’s America?”
“Who’s America? Who’s America? Who’s America? Who’s America?”
[El-P] I’m America! I’m America! I’m America! Mr. Len, get busy on em!

{*DJ Mr. Len the Space Ghost cuts up “God damn!!”*}

[El-Producto]
I’m America arrogant!! Terminus verbal curfew murders
You either purchase my products or you’re worthless, that’s my service!
Don’t look into the oculars of a daylight saver
Eraser, city-headed momument defacer comprising of
patriot droids, sent into the void with lead linings
Employed by the bureaucrats of automatic twisted rhyme timing
You’re guaranteed nothing but my fat little finger
that lingers one inch off of the big button — LET’S START THIS!
I’m Saran gas, hide in your apartments
I’m stealth like a robot hidden in the fat asshole of Cartman
And give a prickly fuck like sand sharkskin condom
to your apparent vaginal problem – the hottest shit on Soundbombing
I’m American til infinite justice measure to Pesticide Cemetary
Invite you to cross the border then SHIT on your divinities
What language is that? I’m angusih in fact, tangle with a
star-spangled standard issue gat for crowd management
Talk loud and get enshrouded in a hot cloud of harassment
by the proud force of my mental pedestrian checker,
that smashes insubordinate skulls and update the file in your dental records
You tried to get elected but the crowd is my paid hecklers (BOO! BOO!)
You just stepped into the spectrum of paranoid word rainbows
Thinkin you sick with a sihlouette, burn transit cop out his plain clothes
I’m America!! This is where the pain grows like poppies
in a Field of Dreams I paid for, I’ll burn it down if operated sloppily
COPY? My economic sanction rhyme style got your syllables
scraping for rice and riding in a pre-1960 jalopy
My favorite flavour of gas is mustard
I’m fuckin a blind hermaphrodite icon and convincin you that it’s justice!

“Who’s America? Who’s America? Who’s America? Who’s America?”
{*DJ Mr. Len the Space Ghost cuts up “God damn!!”*}

[El-Producto]
Treason will not be tolerated!
You have been enlisted.. into a lifestyle that you may not change!
Understand! You can’t be happy.. and smile.. for the cameras!
Motherfucker…

“Our horizon was accessorizing we bred more need
Best believe this be the equation of greed
I need a new car and thus new breaks
Another tune-up with lube
Whatever’s put together shall be unscrewed
In times of famine we made more food
Food made more people
It’s all explained within the cycle of evil
Would I trade it all?
Cruisin’ down the highway on a bright summer day
Gazing out a plane to see the earth from miles away
Watchin the patriots win the super bowl
Grabbin that fumble from Ricky Prole
Or my stereo provided me with rhythm and soul
I don’t know, all I know is I feel guilt for
Every single thing I’ve ever bought and sold
I shoulda been at more demonstrations
Planted bombs in corporations
Murdered CEO’s and cancelled TV shows
Burned billboards and torn posters
I coulda read more
Finally I get to meet this god they left us dead for
And it’s ill, it’s power to the form of a bill
To which people killed by manipulated free will
Conscience be the crucifix a chopping block for poppycock
And I can feel our spirits drop upon these streets I oddly walk
Enough talk! Here’s my last chance to cherish a thought
My flesh is fully melted and my stomach’s in a knot
So to my love I hated to leave you alone
Parted my zone passion took me to places and my life was a poem
Baby I was on my way home about to catch a flight
Our meeting has dissolved in radiation and light
Love you gave me made me shine
You’re gorgeous with a powerful mind
You lifted my spirits and strengthened my spine
I’m at peace with my life cause knowin you was divine
You made me see eternal beauty in a world that was dying
Now we’re all ground by the grind
Out of luck and out of line, out of signs
And now we’re out of time…”

WIND BENEATH MY WINGS

….

In the words of Maya Angelou, I’ve learned that “people will forget what you’ve said, forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. So let’s make em feel it.

….

It’s another beautiful day in the T-dot, I’m strolling down West Queen,

Fresh as fuck and the ladies are out, ain’t shit that can stress me

About to make a left on the next street but got stopped by an elder, the sign on her chest it reads:

“Beauty is everywhere”

It got me thinking for a minute about this concrete jungle and everything that be in it

From all that’s living, to the inanimate objects

Fucked up perceptions when I see human mannequins walking

Left before the right foot, arthritic souls are stressed more

It globalization, they’ve got the same swagger as the next man playing the chessboard

Checkmated by the same pattern because of limited mindfullness

Limited appreciation and lack of education for the sake of simply being educated

But even in school’s teachers lack influential stimulation

On the devil’s side of the picket, there’s no restricted visitation

But this ain’t nathin’, it’s classified information if it’s economically troublin’

The public, they ain’t informed or they misinformed about the witches brew bubblin’ cost of living’s doubling

Everything is big business

Fuck cures, they only alleviate, take your change then dump your carcass in the ditches

But the beauty’s still there

Gotta repeat that – The beauty is still there

Accept what you can’t change, gotta change what you can’t accept

Do it all with a smile, give it and gain respect

God gives you one hand so place your bet

And never fold it, keep your ties close knit

And don’t bitch, just cope kid, just cope Ms.

Every fucking breath we be growing, learning another lesson

Detox yourself of the poisons and earn yourself a blessing

…..

Shit I’ve got to get the right grasp, zig-zagging the wrong and right paths

Gotta formulate the right math

Sometimes I might subtract, sometimes I might add

Sometimes I might take, sometimes I might pass

Sometimes I might ask, sometimes I might grab

All I know is that I’m still breathing but that’s only meaning that I might last

No shit talking, not even passing a light gas

……

And image is everything and there’s usually less than meets the eyes

They get nervous when I meet they eyes knowing I can see the guise

I turned off the t.v. and started listening more than speaking, serving more than eating

I stopped questionning the meaning of why I be breathing

And then I realized that there’s infinite choices but limited chances

So I’ve got to choose to be happy no matter where I’m standing

Temptations are rampant, I manage to maintain,

Alot of dirt in my past but I keep the same name

That be AC – hated by some, loved by others

Still going to bed by breakfast and waking up by supper

Dreams are so vivid, sometimes I don’t know if I did it or if it was just in my slumber

See the difference is I learned from both my wrongs and my rights when I was younger

Buddhist taking the middle path, I’m conscious of both extremes

You can’t claim you in the same boat as me – I’m walking on water

Your inability to understand that’s your own loss, I’m paying my own cost to be my own boss

And I use to keep my head down, now I keep my head up

Can’t keep pace with friends, I’m a leader so I sped up

I’m reading more books, distanced myself from the fast life

Not trying to die young but still live like it’s my last night

I appreciate every breath that I inhale

I savour it then I exhale

Whether the shit’s fresh or that shit’s stale

I found stability by maintaining mobility

Knowledge of self the realest steaz, nothing I’ve got to prove

So it’s cool if you feeling me, cool if you ain’t

I do what I do, choose to do what I do with my day

No games, no roleplay, play my one role AC

Gonna be all that I can be whatever that that may be

And stay doing it regardless of where it may or may not take me

I love Hip-Hop but it doesn’t make me or break me

No shit talking, not even passing a light gas, I mic pass

…..

And by ourselves evil is done, by ourselves we endure pain

By ourselves we cease from wrong, by ourselves we become pure

No one can save us but ourselves

No one can and no one may

We ourselves must tread the path

All I know is that I’m still breathing

All I know is that I’m still breathing

All I know is that I’m still breathing

All I know is that I’m still breathing but that’s only meaning that I might last

All I know is that I’m still breathing

All I know is that I’m still breathing

All I know is that I’m still breathing

All I know is that I’m still breathing but that’s only meaning that I might last…
